Getting started
Is Budget Forecast free?
Yes. One budget with every chart and export is free for as long as you like, with no sign-up wall or credit card. A free account is optional and only adds syncing across your devices. Pro is there when one budget isn’t enough; see the plans.
What does Pro cost, and what does it add?
Pro is $4.99 CAD a month, or $39 CAD a year (about 4 months free). It adds unlimited budgets, the Household view that totals them into one monthly number, custom budget types, and 25 AI-assisted actions a month. There’s a 7-day free trial with no credit card, and nothing you build is deleted if you go back to Free. Compare the plans →
Do I need to create an account?
No. Your plan saves on your device automatically, so you can start right away. Create a free account only if you’d like the same plan on your phone, tablet, and desktop.
How long does it take to set up?
About five minutes for a first home budget. Check off what you own, set how much life each item has left, and your monthly number appears. The AI-assisted setup can draft one even faster from a plain-English description.
What can I budget for?
Start with your home, then add budgets for your vehicle, tech, pets, or travel. You can also build a custom budget type for anything else with big, save-ahead costs.
How the math works
What is a sinking fund?
A sinking fund is money you set aside gradually toward a known future expense, so the cash is ready when the bill arrives instead of scrambling for it or reaching for credit. Budget Forecast builds a sinking fund automatically for every big-ticket thing you own, and adds them into one monthly amount.
How is a sinking fund different from an emergency fund?
A sinking fund is for expenses you can see coming, like a roof or a car. An emergency fund is for the ones you can’t, like a job loss or a burst pipe. Both are worth having, but they answer different questions, and Budget Forecast is built for the first kind: the costs with a name and a rough due date.
How much should I budget for home maintenance each month?
The common rule of thumb is 1 to 4 percent of your home’s value a year, but that’s an average across an entire housing stock, not your specific house. Two homes worth the same amount can need very different amounts depending on the actual age of the roof, furnace, windows, and everything else, which is exactly what Budget Forecast calculates instead of guessing. See the home maintenance calculator for the full breakdown.
How is my monthly number calculated?
For each item, Budget Forecast takes its replacement cost, grows it to its due date for inflation, and spreads it across the months until then. Add up every item and you get one monthly amount: a sinking fund that funds each replacement right on schedule. See the full method →
Does it account for inflation?
Yes. Each future cost is grown to its due date at 2%/year by default, which you can change per budget (or set to 0 to turn it off).
I’ve already saved some money. Does that help?
Absolutely. Enter what you’ve already set aside and your monthly number drops right away to reflect it. The plan tracks where you actually stand.
Why did my number change since last time?
Your timelines age with the calendar, so as replacements get closer the number adjusts on its own. It rises a little if you fall behind and drops when you save. It’s tracking reality, not freezing a snapshot.
Are the costs accurate?
They’re typical ranges to get you started, based on real Canadian pricing: estimates, not quotes. You can override any price or quantity, mark an item DIY, or add custom items, so the plan reflects your home, wherever you live.
Privacy & accounts
Where is my data stored?
On your device by default, in your browser’s local storage. If you sign in, your plan is also saved to your account so it syncs across devices, and nothing more is collected than what’s needed to do that. Because an anonymous plan lives only in your browser, clearing your browser’s site data will erase it, so sign in if you want it kept safe.
Will I lose my plan if I clear my browser?
If you’re not signed in, yes. An anonymous plan is saved in your browser’s local storage, which clearing “cookies and site data” wipes (clearing the cache or history on its own won’t touch it). An incognito window, or a different browser or device, won’t have it either. The fix is to create a free account and sign in: your plan is then saved to your account and reloads anywhere, so clearing local data just pulls it back on your next visit.
Is my information private?
Yes. Nothing leaves your device unless you choose to sign in and sync, and we don’t sell your data. See the Privacy Policy for the details.
How do I sign in or create an account?
Use Sign in or Create an account in the top bar. It’s free, and your local plan carries over when you do.
Will my plan sync between devices?
Yes. Once you’re signed in, your plan syncs automatically and the most recent change wins across devices.
Budget types, AI & modules
What’s the Household view?
It rolls every budget you keep (home, car, pet, travel and more) into one combined monthly number, with a shared timeline of what’s coming up across everything you own. It comes with Pro, and the 7-day trial lets you try it free.
How does the AI-assisted setup work?
Describe what you own in plain words and AI drafts the components and typical costs. You review and approve everything before it’s added, so nothing changes without your say-so. (Available when you’re signed in.)
Can I build my own budget type?
Yes, with Pro. If we don’t ship a module for it, create a custom budget type with your own categories and colours, and the same sinking-fund method does the rest.
Can I use this for a wedding or a new business?
Yes. A wedding fits inside the Travel & Celebrations budget type, or as its own custom budget. Describe it in plain words with a target date (the wedding day, an opening day) and AI drafts a starting list to review. A brand-new business, or anything else we don’t have a built-in type for, can become its own custom budget type with Pro. See the wedding budget planner and business startup budget guides.
